Saucony: from a Pennsylvania river to global running culture

Saucony’s story starts in 1898 along Saucony Creek in Kutztown, Pennsylvania. The name (pronounced “sock-uh-nee”) comes from the Lenape word for that creek; the three dots in the logo represent boulders in the river’s flow. What began as a small factory making durable athletic shoes grew up alongside the sport of running itself—through the early track era, the 1970s running boom, and into today’s city-to-trail lifestyle.

Milestones that shaped the brand

• 1970s running boom: Saucony earned cult respect for performance uppers, grippy outsoles, and honest fit during the era that made distance running mainstream.

• 1981 – Jazz: A Runner’s World favorite and still a streetwear staple today—lightweight, cushioned, and instantly recognizable.

• Late ’80s/early ’90s – Shadow & GRID: The Shadow line cemented Saucony’s everyday comfort; GRID (Ground Reaction Inertia Device) introduced stability + impact dispersion with a TPU-like cage suspended in foam—tech that runners felt on the road.

• 2000s – ProGrid & trail credibility: ProGrid evolved Saucony’s cushioning while the brand doubled down on trail silhouettes—deep lugs, rock plates, and weather protection.
