What adidas actually changed

Start from the Handball Spezial, which has been one of the most-worn silhouettes in the world for three years running. Keep the proportions, the low profile, the serrated three stripes, the T-toe. Then change the parts that matter on grass:

• The outsole. Moulded gum rubber with a golf tread pattern rather than the flat gum sole of the lifestyle version. Traction comes from the pattern, not from cleats.
• No removable spikes. Nothing to screw in, nothing to wear down, nothing to change before you drive home.
• Core Black upper with three stripes in cloud white. The most conservative colourway adidas could have picked for it, which is the right call for a shoe that has to pass a dress code.

Spiked shoes grip better in wet, steep or soft conditions — that is simply true and worth knowing.
