What Is Black Friday and Cyber Monday? A Canadian Guide (2026 Dates)
Black Friday and Cyber Monday are the biggest shopping days of the year. In 2026, Black Friday is Friday, November 27 and Cyber Monday is Monday, November 30. Here's where they came from and how to shop them smart, whether you're in Kelowna or anywhere else in Canada. We're Gallery Streetwear, a streetwear, skate, sneaker and golf shop at 588 Bernard Avenue in downtown Kelowna, and we ship across the country.
What is Black Friday?
It's the day after US Thanksgiving, and for a long time it's been the unofficial start of holiday shopping. Canadian Thanksgiving is in October, but Black Friday took off here anyway.
Where does the name come from?
Nobody agrees. One story says workers called in sick the day after Thanksgiving. The other says retailers went from loss to profit around this time of year, back in the 1950s, and the name stuck through the 1960s.
What is Cyber Monday?
It's the Monday after, built for online shopping. The name was coined in 2005 by Shop.org, part of the National Retail Federation.
How did it get big in Canada?
It grew after the Canadian dollar reached parity with the US dollar in November 2007. Canadians were crossing the border to shop, and Canadian retailers started doing it too.
How to shop it in Canada
A few things I'd check, since this is our job every day:
- Make sure the store is an authorized dealer for the brand. We are for Malbon Golf, and we carry On, New Balance and 60+ other brands.
- Look for prices in Canadian dollars so exchange rates don't surprise you.
- Check shipping costs and the return terms before you check out.
- Buy from a Canadian store and there are no duties at the border. Ours is free tracked shipping over $150 CAD.
If you're in the Okanagan, come into the shop and try things on. Anywhere else, shop online. We have Malbon Golf, sneakers and skate gear in stock. We'll update this page with our Black Friday and Cyber Monday details once they're set.
