The Samba was designed in 1949 by Adi Dassler — not as an indoor shoe, as is often repeated, but as a boot for playing on frozen, icy pitches, with a gum rubber sole for grip on ground that offered none. It picked up its name at the 1950 World Cup in Brazil. Everything that now reads as style started as function: the T-toe overlay protected the part of the boot that took the most punishment, and the low profile kept the foot close to the ball.

Khaki Three is the quiet one. Upper, stripes and heel patch all sit in the same muted khaki, so the three stripes register as texture rather than a logo. It behaves like a neutral in a way the black-and-white pair does not, and it sits with washed denim, olive, brown and cream without asking for attention.
