Why Gramicci pants are shaped the way they are

Gramicci was founded in California in 1982 by Mike Graham, a climber whose nickname was Gramicci. He had spent years climbing in cut-off military surplus and was tired of trousers that bound at the hip the moment he tried to make a high step.

Two solutions came out of that, and they are still the two things that make a Gramicci a Gramicci:

• The gusseted crotch. A diamond of fabric set into the crotch seam instead of four seams meeting at one point. It removes the pull that stops you lifting your knee, and it is also the reason the pants do not blow out at the crotch the way ordinary trousers do.
• The integrated webbing belt. A flat webbing belt with a single-pull buckle, sewn in. You can tighten or release it one-handed, mid-move, without a buckle digging into your stomach when you bend.

Neither was a styling decision. Both are why the pants sit and move the way they do, and why they translated so easily out of climbing and into everyday wear — first in Japan through the 1990s, where Gramicci became a staple long before it did in North America, and now more or less everywhere.

The Gramicci Pant — the original

The one everything else descends from. Cotton twill, gusseted crotch, webbing belt, a relaxed straight leg that tapers slightly. The Gadget Pant — the one with the pockets

The Original with cargo pockets added and a slightly more technical cut. If you actually use pockets — and if you are outdoors in the Okanagan, you probably do — this is the more useful pant of the two. Currently in Black, Olive and Brown Pigment.

The Voyager and EQT Pants — the travel end

Lighter, faster-drying, cut for moving around in rather than sitting still. The Voyager Pant and EQT Pant are the ones to look at if you want something that packs small and does not need ironing.

The denim and corduroy styles — the winter answer

Gramicci's Japanese denim programme is the quiet highlight of the line and the reason a lot of people who came for the twill pants stay. The Japanese 5-Pocket Denim Pant keeps the gusset but reads as a straight pair of jeans. For colder months there is also the Corduroy Loose Tapered Ridge Pant and the Big Wale Carpenter Pant.

The G-Short — the summer version

Same gusset, same webbing belt, shorter. The G-Short is the single most-repeated item Gramicci makes and the one people tend to buy in three colours.

How do Gramicci pants fit?

Three things worth knowing before you order.

1. They are cut roomy, and that is deliberate. A Gramicci pant is meant to have space through the hip and thigh. If you take your usual size and think it looks generous, that is the pant working as designed rather than a sizing error.

2. The webbing belt does a lot of the sizing for you. Because the waist cinches, the pants tolerate being slightly large far better than most trousers. If you are between sizes, size up rather than down — the belt will take in the waist, but nothing will give you back room through the seat.

3. Inseams run long on the straight-leg styles. Many people hem them or let them stack. Worth deciding which you want before you cut anything.

Women's styles follow the same logic on a women's block. The Original Pant and the G-Short are the two we most often see bought a size up on purpose for a looser fit.
