The 574, briefly

The 574 was designed in 1988 by New Balance's Steven Smith, built by combining elements of the 575 and 576. It introduced ENCAP cushioning — a soft EVA core wrapped in a firmer polyurethane ring, sitting under the heel where you cannot see it — and that construction is still in New Balance shoes nearly forty years later.

It has been in continuous production ever since, which is not something you can say about many sneakers. Normally the 574 is the quiet one — the New Balance you reach for without thinking. This version is not that. Same shoe, same shape, same nearly-forty-year-old silhouette, wearing something considerably louder.

Why the cow print works on this shoe

Animal print on a sneaker usually goes one of two ways: it either swallows the shoe or it looks stuck on. The 574 handles it because the silhouette is so familiar and so plain that your eye reads the shape first and the print second. The panels are calf hair rather than printed synthetic, so the texture changes as the light moves — which is what stops it reading as a novelty.

Black and cream also means it behaves like a neutral from three feet away. It goes with more than you would expect for a shoe that is, up close, covered in cows.
