The 99X series, redrawn
The 9060 was unveiled in 2022, designed by New Balance's James Lee and Yue Wu. It reaches back into the 99X line — the series that started with the 990 in 1982 — and pushes it somewhere else entirely, borrowing proportions from 2000s runners like the 860v2 and blowing the details up.
What you get is a sculpted midsole of exaggerated wavy pods, visible ABZORB at the heel and SBS underneath, a wavy overlay across the upper and a heel clip that looks structural because it is. It reads retro-futuristic without being a costume, which is the reason it outlived the trend cycle that launched it.
The design brief started at the tail end of 2019, before anyone knew what the next three years would look like. It landed into a market that had spent those years getting comfortable with chunk, and it has not left the conversation since.
It is also, in our experience on the floor, the New Balance most people try on and then come back for in a second colourway six weeks later.

The 9060 runs about half a size large. That is our own observation from selling them in store, not something New Balance publishes. Most people are comfortable going half a size down from their usual New Balance.
It is also a forgiving shoe through the midfoot. If you have a wider foot and have bounced off narrower New Balance silhouettes, the 9060 is the one to try — even before you account for the half size.
