The Last Resort AB story — Pontus Alv and dream four

Skateboard shoes spent twenty years being made by corporations that don’t skate, for a market that does. Last Resort AB exists because Pontus Alv got tired of that. Alv — the Swedish professional skateboarder who founded Polar Skate Co. and has spent his whole career building from inside skate culture rather than outside it — teamed up with footwear veteran and creative director Sami Tolppi in 2018 with a specific mandate: make the best skateboard shoe on the market, with no corporate interference and no compromises on construction.

“When I look out at the so-called skate shoe landscape there is something about it that feels off and weird,” Alv said. “These huge corporations running things their way.” His response was not to complain about it but to build something better. For Alv it was dream four — the pro career, the film projects, Polar Skate Co., and now this. The brand relaunched in 2020 and the VM001 launched straight into the first pandemic lockdowns. It sold out anyway. The reputation was made in a single release.

The VM001 — the shoe that started it

The VM001 is a low-profile vulcanised skate shoe built around a simple premise: skateboarding is an art of millimetres, so every detail matters. The foxing tape height is set for flip-trick durability. The eyelets sit higher and closer together to shrink the lace contact area and keep griptape off them. The outsole pattern uses slanted angles so gravel does not pack into it. The last is cut snug and adapts to the shape of your foot after a few sessions.

We carry it in two of its silhouettes: the Lo in Nick Blue, which is the purist’s version — minimal, clean, board feel above everything — and the Hi in Black/White suede, which adds ankle coverage without changing the construction.

The CM003 — the cupsole option

The CM003 brings cupsole construction to the line for skaters who want impact protection. Where the VM-series uses vulcanised construction for maximum board feel and a flat, close-to-the-board ride, the CM003’s cupsole adds a layer of cushioning — the right choice for gaps, stairs and impact-heavy terrain. Same minimal aesthetic, functionally different ride. We have it in White/Gum.

Why Last Resort AB

The Canadian skate shoe market is dominated by the same corporate brands Alv built Last Resort AB to counteract — owned by multinationals, designed by committee, tested on machines rather than by skaters. Last Resort AB is the alternative: small, owned and run by the people who founded it, designed by professional skaters, and tested by skating them until they fail. Most brands run shoes through 50,000 steps on a machine. Last Resort AB runs 100,000.
